How long can I teach in the United States on a J-1 visa?
The J-1 Teacher Exchange Program allows you to teach in the United States for up to three years. This extended timeframe provides meaningful cultural exchange, professional development, and the opportunity to make a lasting impact on your students and host school community.
What are the program fees and when do I need to pay?
HRC International does not charge any upfront administration fees. Payments are only required after you've been accepted by a host school. Our fee structure is transparent and spread out over the program timeline. Visit our Fees & Financial Information page for complete details on program costs, visa processing fees, and expected expenses.
What kind of salary can I expect as a J-1 teacher?
J-1 teachers receive competitive compensation comparable to similarly qualified American teachers at their host school. Salaries vary by location, subject area, grade level, and your qualifications, but provide sufficient income to maintain a comfortable standard of living. Your specific salary will be outlined in your school placement agreement.
Does HRC help with finding housing in the United States?
Yes! While teachers are responsible for securing their own housing, HRC provides optional housing assistance like recommendations and resources to help you find suitable accommodations. Many partner schools also offer guidance on local housing options. We recommend beginning your search before arrival and budgeting for initial deposits and expenses.
Can I bring my spouse and children with me?
Absolutely. You can bring your spouse and children as J-2 dependents. However, we recommend waiting at least three months after your arrival to allow time to settle into your new environment and establish routines. Please note that you're responsible for all J-2 visa processing fees, consulate fees, living expenses, and insurance for your dependents throughout the program.
Do I need to find my own teaching position before applying?
Most teachers work with HRC after securing a job offer from a U.S. school. However, if you're actively seeking a teaching position, contact us! We maintain an extensive network of partner schools nationwide and may be able to help connect you with opportunities that match your qualifications and preferences.
Can I travel outside the United States during my program?
Yes! You can travel internationally for vacation or to visit home once your DS-2019 is validated. Simply coordinate with your account manager before making travel arrangements to ensure all documentation is current and proper procedures are followed for re-entry to the United States.
What happens after I arrive in the United States?
Upon arrival, contact HRC to check in and begin settling into your new community. Wait 10 days after arrival before applying for your Social Security number at your local Social Security Administration office. Set up your U.S. phone number, familiarize yourself with your school and local area, and attend any orientation sessions provided by your host school or HRC.
What support does HRC provide throughout my teaching program?
HRC provides comprehensive ongoing support including: 24/7 emergency assistance for teachers and schools, regular program monitoring and evaluations, annual professional development opportunities, cultural activities to help you integrate into American life, access to a buddy program connecting you with fellow international educators, tax filing assistance, and continuous communication with your dedicated career consultant.
