Description:
Located along Florida’s southeastern coast, Fort Lauderdale is a vibrant coastal city known for its beaches, waterways, and relaxed yet energetic lifestyle. Often called the “Venice of America,” the city is defined by its extensive canal system and proximity to the Atlantic Ocean. Fort Lauderdale is well connected by major highways and Fort Lauderdale–Hollywood International Airport, making travel around Miami, South Florida, and beyond easy. The city offers a mix of laid-back neighborhoods and lively districts. Las Olas Boulevard serves as the social and cultural hub, lined with shops, restaurants, galleries, and nightlife, while areas near the beach offer a resort-style atmosphere. Outdoor enthusiasts, food lovers, and social explorers will always have something to do, from boating and beach days to waterfront dining and festivals. With warm weather year-round and a strong tourism-driven economy, Fort Lauderdale offers a lifestyle centered on sunshine, social activity, and coastal living.
Housing:
Housing in Fort Lauderdale varies by neighborhood and proximity to the beach and is generally more expensive than many inland U.S. cities. A typical studio or one-bedroom apartment averages around $1,600–$1,900 per month, with prices often higher in coastal areas such as Las Olas, Downtown, and near the beach. More affordable options can be found farther inland or through shared apartments, with some rentals ranging from $1,100–$1,400 per month. Candidates are encouraged to visit apartments in person when possible and to connect with other J1 candidates or roommates through Facebook groups. Without established U.S. credit, landlords may require first and last month’s rent, and sometimes an additional security deposit. HRC recommends arriving with at least $3,000 to help secure housing and cover initial living expenses.

Transportation:
Fort Lauderdale has public transportation, but it is limited compared to larger U.S. cities. Broward County Transit (BCT) operates local bus routes throughout the city and surrounding areas, and the Sun Trolley provides convenient service in popular areas such as the beach, downtown, and Las Olas Boulevard. Tri-Rail commuter trains connect Fort Lauderdale with Miami, West Palm Beach, and other parts of South Florida, which can be useful for regional travel. While public transit can work if you live and work near major routes, many parts of Fort Lauderdale are spread out, making a car the most practical option for daily life. If you plan to purchase a vehicle, it is recommended to bring an additional $2,000–$3,000 to cover the cost of a used car, registration, and insurance. Ride-share services are widely available and commonly used, especially for leisure and nightlife, but should not be relied on for daily commuting due to fluctuating pricing and availability.

Climate:
Fort Lauderdale has a tropical climate with hot, humid summers and very warm, dry winters, making it a true year-round beach city. Summers are long and steamy, with June through September average highs around 88–91 °F (31–33 °C) and high humidity. Afternoon thunderstorms are common in summer and early fall, providing most of the area’s rainfall. Winters are mild and sunny, with January average highs around 75–77 °F (24–25 °C) and lows rarely dropping below the low 60s °F (16–17 °C). Snow and freezing temperatures are essentially nonexistent. Overall, Fort Lauderdale offers consistent warm weather and sunshine, ideal for those who enjoy coastal living, outdoor activities, and escaping cold winters.
