Housing:
Housing in Napa is significantly more expensive than many mid-sized U.S. cities due to its popularity and limited supply. A typical studio or one-bedroom apartment averages around $2,100–$2,400 per month, while more budget-friendly option, such as shared housing or units farther from downtown, may be found in the $1,400–$1,700 range. Candidates are strongly encouraged to begin their housing search very early, visit apartments in person when possible, and connect with other J-1 candidates or locals through Facebook groups to share housing and reduce costs due to the housing situation in the city. Without established U.S. credit, landlords commonly require first and last month’s rent as a deposit. HRC recommends arriving with at least $3,500–$4,000 to help secure housing and cover initial living expenses.

Transportation:
Napa has limited public transportation, especially compared to major U.S. cities. The local Vine Transit system provides bus service within Napa and connections to nearby towns, but routes and schedules are fairly limited. Public transit can work if you live and work along main bus lines, but much of Napa and the surrounding wine country is spread out, making a car the most practical option for daily life. If you plan to purchase a vehicle, it is recommended to bring an additional $2,000–$3,000 to help cover the cost of a used car, registration, and insurance.
