Local info
Description:
Located in the heart of Tennessee, Nashville is a lively, growing city known for its vibrant music scene, strong economy, and rich cultural heritage. Major interstates and highways connect the city in all directions, making it easy to explore Tennessee and neighboring states. Nashville offers a unique urban experience with neighborhoods that each have their own character. Downtown is bustling with nightlife and historic sites, East Nashville is artsy and eclectic with murals, live music, and local cafés, while The Gulch features trendy shops and upscale dining. Music lovers will never run out of things to do with the city’s iconic live performances on Broadway and concerts at the Ryman Auditorium. With plenty of parks, trails, and nearby outdoor escapes like Radnor Lake or the Cumberland River, Nashville blends city life with easy access to nature!
Housing:
Housing in Nashville varies by neighborhood but is generally more affordable than many coastal cities. A typical studio or one-bedroom apartment averages around $1,200–$1,400 per month, while more budget-friendly options farther from downtown, or shared apartments, can be found for $850–$1,050 per month. Candidates are encouraged to visit apartments in person when possible and to connect with another J1 candidate or roommate via Facebook groups to share housing. Without established U.S. credit, landlords may require first and last month’s rent as a deposit. HRC recommends arriving with at least $2,500 to secure housing and cover initial living expenses.

Transportation:
Nashville has limited public transportation compared to major U.S. cities. The MTA provides bus service across Davidson County and some surrounding areas, but many parts of the city are spread out, making a car by far the most practical option for daily life. If you plan to purchase a vehicle, it’s recommended to bring an additional $2,000–$3,000 to cover the cost of a used car, registration, and insurance. Ride-share services like Uber and Lyft are widely available and commonly used, especially for leisurely purposes, but the variability in pricing and availability makes it difficult to rely on for daily commuting purposes.

Climate:
Nashville has a humid subtropical climate with hot summers, mild winters, and plenty of sunshine throughout the year. Summers can be long, hot, and humid, with July and August average highs around 89–91 °F (32–33 °C) and occasional days exceeding 95 °F (35 °C). Thunderstorms are common in late spring and summer, contributing to most of the city’s annual rainfall. Winters are generally mild, with January average highs near 45–48 °F (7–9 °C) and lows in the mid-20s °F (–4 °C). Snowfall is infrequent and usually light, though occasional winter storms can occur. Overall, Nashville offers warm, humid summers and mostly mild winters, making it ideal for those who enjoy a generally temperate climate with a touch of seasonal variety.
