Housing:

Housing in Dallas varies widely by neighborhood but is generally more affordable than many major U.S. cities. A typical studio or one-bedroom apartment averages around $1,300–$1,400 per month, while more budget-friendly options farther from downtown, or shared apartments, can be found for $900–$1,100 per month. Candidates are encouraged to visit apartments in person when possible and to find another J1 candidate or roommate via Facebook groups to live with. Without established U.S. credit, landlords may require first and last month’s rent as a deposit. HRC recommends arriving with at least $2,500 to help secure housing and cover initial living expenses.

Transportation:

Dallas has public transportation, but it is more limited compared to some major U.S. cities. The DART system provides bus and light-rail service connecting downtown Dallas with surrounding areas, including parts of the wider metroplex. Public transit can work if you live and work near rail lines, but many areas of Dallas are spread out, making a car the most practical option for daily life. If you plan to purchase a vehicle, it is recommended to bring an additional $2,000–$3,000 to cover the cost of a used car, registration, and insurance. Ride-share services are widely available and commonly used, especially for commuting, nightlife, and areas not easily reached by public transit.

You can learn more about the DART system and other public transportation options here.

Climate:

Dallas has a humid subtropical climate with hot summers, mild winters, and plenty of sunshine throughout the year. Summers are long, hot, and often humid, with July and August average highs around 96–98 °F (36–37 °C) and frequent stretches above 100 °F (38 °C). Thunderstorms are common in spring and early summer, bringing most of the city’s annual rainfall. Winters are generally mild, with January average highs near 55–57 °F (13–14 °C) and lows typically in the mid-30s °F (1–2 °C). Freezing temperatures and snowfall are rare, though brief cold snaps can occur. Overall, Dallas offers warm weather for most of the year, making it ideal for those who prefer heat over snow and don’t mind the occasional Texas-sized summer.
