Local info

Charlottesville is a city in Virginia. It’s home to the University of Virginia, with its core campus designed by Thomas Jefferson. On the outskirts, Jefferson’s mountain-top plantation, Monticello, includes a mansion and rebuilt slave quarters. Highland, President James Monroe’s home, retains many original furnishings. The city is a gateway to Shenandoah National Park, along a section of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Transportation:
Depending on the location of your housing, a car may not be necessary while living in Charlottesville. The Charlottesville Area Transit (CAT) is quite convenient, making travel around the city fairly easy. CAT is free too!

Housing:
Charlottesville, VA, and its surrounding areas, is expensive. A 1-bedroom apartment can start around $1,600+ per month, unfurnished.

We recommend that you consider rooming with another J-1 or local share the cost of the living. The metro is very reliable, which allows the option to live outside the city where the cost of living will be a bit less expensive. Please note, without established credit, your first and last month’s rent may be required as a deposit. HRC recommends you arrive with at least $3,000 as startup capital and to help secure housing.
