Local info

Description:

Texas is the largest state in the continental U.S. with a population of over 30 million people. Texas is known for it's food, history, and as the home base for NASA. Life in Texas is diverse and varied depending on your location, with coastal, mountainous, and flatland regions. Whether you like big cities or small towns where everybody knows their neighbor, there is a place for you somewhere in Texas!

Housing:

Housing in Texas varies widely depending on the area. A one bedroom, unfurnished apartment will typically cost around $1,600 per month before utilities. The cost could be higher or lower depending on the area you stay in, the size of the apartment/house, and the amenities offered. Living in smaller cities and rural areas gives you cheaper living options as well. HRC highly recommends you begin looking for housing in the area of your host school before you arrive in the US.

Please note, without established credit a deposit of the first and last month’s rent may be required. HRC recommends you bring enough funds for 3 months worth of rent and living expenses upon arrival. HRC is unable to financially assist you with any living expenses.
Be aware of rental scams. Be sure to do your research and be careful where you send your deposits. HRC recommends using reputable rental sources like those listed below. If you are able, visit the property in person before forfeiting any funds or signing any legal documentation.

Transportation:

If you are living in a larger city such as Houston, Dallas, or Austin, you will likely have access to public transportation systems which can help you keep transportation costs down. Rideshares and taxis are also available for use, but tend to be a much more expensive option for transportation. If you are in a rural area or an area without access to reliable public transportation, you may want to invest in a private vehicle for your time in the US. Most vehicles will require a down payment along with monthly payments for the total cost of the vehicle. If you are interested in purchasing a vehicle, you will need to be sure you have enough funds for your down payment, monthly payments, monthly insurance, vehicle registration, drivers license, and any fuel and maintenance costs.

Climate:

Being in the southern United States, Texas has hot and humid summers and mostly mild winters. Temperatures during the summer (June-September) can regularly surpass 100 degrees Fahrenheit (32C) with only a few rainy days a month. Winters (November-February) have a few cold days with light snow a few days a year. Winter temperatures can get as low as 32 degrees Fahrenheit (0C) with the occasional snow storm.
