Local info

Description:

Baltimore, MD lies just around 40 miles north of Washington, D.C. but has a vibe all its own. Baltimore’s claim-to-fame may be that it was the birthplace of America’s National Anthem, “The Star-Spangled Banner,” but its determined, down-to-earth spirit makes it a truly American city. With a dynamic Inner Harbor – the best view of which is from atop Federal Hill – that was as busy in the 18th Century as it is today, Baltimore is a city of contrasts. This center for cultural and heritage travel also is known for its quaint neighborhoods and thriving culinary scene. Tour the important landmarks like the first Washington Monument or first Catholic cathedral in the United States, but don’t miss seeing the vintage row houses and meeting proud, friendly locals.

Housing:

Being so close to Washington D.C., housing in Baltimore can be expensive. Studio, 1 BR, and 2 BR apartments are available for $1500-$5000 per month unfurnished and before utilities. We recommend that you consider rooming with another J-1 or local share the cost of the living. The metro is very reliable, which allows the option to live outside the city where the cost of living will be a bit less expensive. Please note, without established credit your first and last month’s rent may be required as a deposit. HRC recommends you arrive with at least $2,500 as startup capital and to help secure housing.

Transportation:

The metro is very reliable, which allows the option to live outside the city where the cost of living will be a bit less expensive.

BaltimoreLink is a complete overhaul and rebranding of the core transit system operating within the city and throughout the greater Baltimore region. The bus network prior to BaltimoreLink had many routes that were antiquated, served outdated job locations and were too long to manage reliably, especially those that traversed downtown Baltimore and compounded congestion.

If further travel is desired, a car may need to be rented or purchased. HRC recommends J1 candidates bring at least $3,000 in addition to startup capital in order to help obtain a car and insurance. If a car is purchased insurance is required and can cost around $150 per month.
