Sutanya S for TripAdvisor: “The staff at this establishment are the best I’ve ever encountered. They made sure that they took care of my colleague s and my group of students who were visiting DC for our college tour. They moved quickly to accommodate our large group on short notice while still being courteous and friendly.”
Mark B for TripAdvisor: “Spent three nights at this property over Easter weekend with my wife and two kids, 6&2. Hotel was the perfect location for what we wanted. Very close to the National Mall and Wharf. Hotel sits on a shopping center with plenty of food outlets, Metro station and CVS. *Side note, food outlets for breakfast on weekends aren't open. There's a free shuttle bus that stops across the street that loops around the Wharf and Mall or you can easily walk to Mall, approx 10mins to the Air/Space museum and 20mins to the Natural History Museum. The room was nice, clean, large with two king beds. Shower was great, large TV with streaming options, small fridge, safe, iron with board, hairdryer and plenty of space for clothes. Housekeeping was consistent, plenty of towels, (which were super soft) and toiletries. I am not sure about the "night light" comments made by other guests, yes there's a very soft bathroom light underneath the mirror that remained on but it certainly didn't "flood" the room. My family went to make some memories and that's exactly what we did. I'd stay there again just for its location and ease of access to the Metro. Hotel also sits very close to major highways so it's easy to access. All the staff we encountered were friendly as expected. We enjoyed our experience.”
Transportation:
Depending on the location of your housing, a car may not be necessary while living in D.C. The D.C. metro access across the D.C. area is quite convenient making travel around the city fairly easy. It is recommended that you get metro passes as soon as you can once in D.C. Also, it is important to note that the D.C. metro uses a sliding scale system regarding the cost of their metro, meaning that the further you travel on the metro the more expensive the trip will be. That means it is especially important to consider the location of your housing compared to where the hotel is. However, if you still plan on buying a car, car insurance is approximately $111 per month, and the average used car costs about $400 per month or more. https://www.washingtonian.com/2016/03/15/dc-public-transportation-guide-to-dc/
Housing:
Washington DC Metro area, and the surrounding areas like Alexandria and Arlington, is expensive. A 1-bedroom apartment can start around $2,300+ per month, unfurnished.
HRC places over 30 J1's in D.C. every year so there are plenty of other J1's to help you get settled in the area!
We recommend that you consider rooming with another J-1 or local share the cost of the living. The metro is very reliable, which allows the option to live outside the city where the cost of living will be a bit less expensive. Please note, without established credit your first and last month’s rent may be required as a deposit. HRC recommends you arrive with at least $2,500 as startup capital and to help secure housing.
